SMYRNA — Students and staff at Smyrna Middle School were safely evacuated Thursday afternoon after a fire broke out in one of the classrooms, according to school officials.

James Evans, spokesperson for Rutherford County Schools, confirmed that all students were safe, accounted for, and had been fed lunch following the evacuation. The fire was quickly extinguished by the fire department, and an investigation was conducted on-site before the building was cleared.

Following the investigation, it was determined that two students brought a lighter to school and set fire to a piece of paper. The flames then spread to a shelf of textbooks, causing the classroom fire. The school’s resource officer and administration worked together to identify the students responsible. They will face disciplinary action in accordance with the school district's code of conduct once the fire department concludes its investigation.

"Everyone followed safety procedures and evacuated the school just as we practice during drills," Evans said. "We are grateful for the quick response from our staff and emergency personnel, and for the patience and cooperation of our parents."

During the incident, students remained outside while emergency crews completed their work. Buses operated on their normal schedule, and parents who wished to pick up their children early were allowed to do so. Staff checked out students using laptops, and parents were asked to present photo identification.

The school was dismissed for the remainder of the day. Evans expressed appreciation to everyone who acted swiftly to ensure student and staff safety.
