PODCAST (Click Play Above): In this episode of the WGNS Action Line, host Scott Walker sits down with Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Chief Mark McCluskey (pictured above right) to provide an inside look at the department’s current operations and future planning. Early in the conversation, the chief highlights key topics, including the department’s budget, as city budget planning nears completion and council members shift their focus to the upcoming 2026–27 fiscal year.

Another major topic on nearly everyone’s mind this week is fuel prices—more specifically, the cost of diesel, which powers Murfreesboro’s fire trucks as they respond to calls. As of Tuesday afternoon (5/5/2026), the average price of diesel in Tennessee stood at $5.23 per gallon, while the national average hovered at $5.63. Just 12 months ago, the nationwide average price was $3.53 per gallon.

The conversation also turns to technology in the fire service. This past April, Chief McCluskey and several department leaders traveled to Indianapolis for the annual Fire Department Instructors Conference International, the largest firefighting convention in the United States and one of the biggest in the world. There, Murfreesboro firefighters got a firsthand look at emerging technologies designed to support a wide range of life-saving efforts.

Chief McCluskey also addresses the growing role of artificial intelligence in real-world applications. While AI-driven robots won’t be replacing firefighters anytime soon, the technology is being used to enhance report accuracy and improve data collection, ultimately helping the department better serve the community.

Like many first responder agencies, some departments are also incorporating virtual reality into their training programs. During the episode, the chief shares his perspective on the current state of AI and VR training, noting that while promising, the technology still has room to grow before being fully integrated into local training operations.
