RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN (WGNS) - National Drug Take Back Day is almost here, and there are secure drop-off locations across Rutherford County from 10:00AM to 2:00PM this Saturday, April 25, 2026. Officials underline the fact that residents can safely and anonymously dispose of unwanted medications at designated drop‑off sites in Murfreesboro, Smyrna, and La Vergne. It’s a simple way to clean out medicine cabinets, prevent misuse, and keep dangerous drugs out of the wrong hands.
MURFREESBORO
Murfreesboro residents have a unique option this year: Murfreesboro Medical Clinic is offering an early drop‑off window on Friday, April 24, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM at both its Garrison Drive and Westlawn locations. For anyone who can’t make Saturday’s hours, this early collection at two MMC locations provides a convenient alternative.
- Murfreesboro Police Department's DRUG TAKE BACK box is in the lobby and is accessible 7AM-10PM daily. (1004 N. Highland Ave.)
- Rutherford County Sheriff's Office has a drop-off bin at the front office (near flag pole) and it's available 24-hours daily (940 New Salem Highway)
SMYRNA
Smyrna Police will be set up at 400 Enon Springs Road East, partnering with the Prevention Coalition for Success to collect tablets, capsules, and patches. Officers there say the community’s participation each year directly supports prevention efforts aimed at reducing accidental poisoning and prescription drug misuse.
La VERGNE
In La Vergne, the Police Department will host its collection at the Public Safety Building at 2061 Third Street, just behind City Hall. Officers will be accepting unused solid medications, pills and patches only--no sharp needles or liquids. They say the event consistently draws strong participation from families who want a safe, judgment‑free way to get rid of old prescriptions.
On-Going Drop Off Locations
If you can’t make it to a Take Back Day site, Rutherford County has several year‑round disposal options. The Sheriff’s Office on New Salem Highway maintains a 24‑hour anonymous drop box in its lobby. La Vergne Police also offer a secure disposal box at their Murfreesboro Road headquarters, and Smyrna Pharmacy and Wellness accepts medications during regular business hours. Many Walgreens and CVS locations in the county also feature permanent disposal kiosks.
Officials remind participants that accepted items include prescription pills, capsules, patches, and even pet medications. Items not accepted include sharps, needles, syringes, illicit drugs, and IV solutions. Labels do not need to be removed, though you can black out personal information if you prefer. Any allowed liquids should remain tightly sealed in their original containers.
Whether you’re clearing out old prescriptions or helping protect your household and community, Saturday’s Take Back Day offers an easy, responsible way to make a difference.
