MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - The Murfreesboro Community Investment Trust Committee on Contributions will meet at 1:00 o’clock this coming Tuesday afternoon (2/10/2026) at the Municipal Airport Business Center Community Room, located at 1930 Memorial Boulevard. This committee plays a key role in guiding how Murfreesboro uses the $302 million generated from the sale of the Murfreesboro Electric Department to Middle Tennessee Electric Cooperative. That sale was approved in January 2020, finalized in July 2020, and the Trust’s Board of Trustees was formally appointed in 2022.

This coming Tuesday’s meeting will focus on several items, including proposed calculations for the charitable grant process, recommendations for FY27 funding, and a review of the evaluation timeline for FY28. If you’ve ever thought, “Here’s where some of that money should go,” this is the kind of meeting that shapes those decisions. Residents who want to speak on actionable items must sign up at least six hours before the meeting begins. You can do that online at the city’s Public Comment Form or by calling 615‑849‑2629.

For those new to the process, the Committee on Contributions reviews and scores applications from charitable organizations. Their recommendations then move to the Community Investment Trust Board of Trustees, and final approval rests with the Murfreesboro City Council. It’s a layered system designed to keep the process transparent, accountable, and community‑focused.

This past fiscal year, the Trust distributed $490,696 to twenty‑nine qualified charitable organizations. That amount represented the available earnings under the Trust agreement for FY26. With the fund continuing to grow, an estimated eleven percent increase in available funds is expected for FY26‑27. Eligible nonprofits submitted their applications during the October 1–31, 2025 window, and award announcements will be posted by March 31, 2026.

The Trust itself was created to ensure that the proceeds from the MED sale would benefit Murfreesboro for generations. Its mission is to invest those funds wisely and use the earnings to support city infrastructure, long‑term public projects, and local nonprofits. In short, it’s a financial engine designed to keep Murfreesboro strong well into the future.

Again, the Committee on Contributions meets this coming Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock at the Municipal Airport Business Center. If you want to follow the process or learn more about the grant program, the city has details available on its website.
