Murfreesboro Moving Forward with AI-Powered Traffic Light System

Jan 15, 2026 at 12:14 pm by WGNS News

MURFREESBORO, TN - We have more information on a news story you heard on WGNS this past week that involves artificial intelligence being used to create a smarter traffic light system in Murfreesboro… That was Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland.

Construction on the project is expected to get underway soon, with an overall goal of improving traffic flow and reducing congestion throughout Murfreesboro, one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States…

The mayor also talked about how the high-tech system works… Currently, much of the city’s traffic signal management is handled manually during peak driving times from the traffic center inside City Hall. Once the new system is fully operational, significant changes in traffic flow are expected, and the outlook for easing congestion appears promising.

In February of last year, the city began the approval process to move forward with the project, allowing for a five percent cost adjustment to account for potential increases in installation expenses once construction begins. In 2025, the project cost was approved at $5.1 million, but the start of the new year brought a price increase to approximately $6.2 million. However, a significant portion of the cost will be covered through outside funding…

Again, construction is moving forward on a brand-new traffic signal system across Murfreesboro. The upgraded system will incorporate artificial intelligence technology with the goal of improving traffic flow and reducing congestion citywide.
