ROCKVALE, Tenn. (WGNS) - The Rockvale High School football program has been placed under a two-year probation by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association after the school disclosed a recruiting-related rules violation.
The penalty, which extends through the conclusion of the 2026–27 school year, follows a determination by TSSAA officials that improper contact occurred between members of the Rockvale football coaching staff and a prospective student-athlete and their family.
As part of the disciplinary action, Rockvale will reduce the number of spring football practice days, cancel one scheduled scrimmage, and require all football coaches to complete additional training focused on recruiting regulations and compliance.
The violation stemmed from a campus visit in November during which Rockvale head coach James Counce and other members of the football staff interacted directly with the family of a potential student-athlete. TSSAA rules prohibit coaches from engaging in conversations or activities that could influence a student’s enrollment for athletic reasons. Instead, such interactions are required to be handled by school administrators.
TSSAA officials concluded that the contact, which took place while the family was on campus attending a basketball game, went beyond what is permitted under recruiting guidelines. The matter was brought to the association’s attention through a self-report by the school, prompting a formal review and subsequent disciplinary decision.
Despite the probation, the Rockets will remain eligible to compete during the upcoming seasons. However, the program will operate under heightened oversight through mid-2027 to ensure compliance with association policies.
Counce, who joined Rockvale after previously coaching at Henry County, completed his first season with the Rockets in 2025, finishing with a 4–6 record.
