SMYRNA, TN (WGNS News) - Hometown spirit was on full display last Saturday at the Historic Sam Davis Home as the 15th Annual Chili Cook-Off brought a record crowd to what has become a winter traditions. Hosted with support from 49th District State Representative Mike Sparks, the event blended friendly competition, classic cars, live music and plenty of laughter on a crisp January afternoon.
This year’s chili winners earned bragging rights in a field packed with strong contenders. Frann Dunn took home the Mayor’s Choice Award, while Sharri and Scott Butler claimed first place. Christopher Carter earned second, and Dan McAnally rounded out the top three. The judging panel included Mayor Mary Esther Reed, Christy Armstrong Pugh, Judge Terry Fann and Commissioner Rick Hall, each taking their time sampling pots of chili that ranged from mild and savory to bold and spicy.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, the Mid‑Tenn Hot Rodders rolled in with an impressive lineup of 45 to 50 classic cars. One of the day’s most lighthearted moments came during a special birthday shout‑out for Rod Roberts, owner of Murfreesboro’s Mr. Fix It. In a bit of perfect irony, the longtime mechanic won a brand‑new toolbox donated by Elders Hardware.
Organizers shared their appreciation for the many hands that made the event possible, including Rodger Thomas, Tony Campbell, Alicia McFarland, Marty Luffman, Lori North, Tracy Gray and others who helped gather door prizes and coordinate the day. Paul Lamb and his musicians kept the crowd entertained with live music, while Michael Morton provided the PA system that carried announcements, jokes and plenty of good‑natured ribbing across the grounds.
