MURFREESBORO, TN - Despite the chill in the air, Murfreesboro’s historic Public Square was glowing Friday (12/5/2025) evening as families bundled up to witness the annual Christmas tree lighting. At exactly 6:00 PM, Santa and Mrs. Claus made their grand entrance, flipping the switch on a towering three-story tree that now sparkles on the east side of the Rutherford County Courthouse.

The scene was nothing short of picture-perfect. With Middle Tennessee Electric and Murfreesboro Main Street orchestrating the details, many in the crowd described the evening as a “Norman Rockwell portrait come to life.” The courthouse itself added to the magic, bathed in red and green lights that made the entire square feel like a living holiday card.

Music, Dance, and Holiday Cheer

The sounds of the season filled the air as choirs from Murfreesboro City Schools sang traditional favorites, joined by performers from the Center for the Arts and local dance groups. Their performances brought warmth to the cold night, reminding everyone why this grown to become a holiday tradition.

Carriage Rides and Local Shopping

Adding to the festive atmosphere were horse-drawn carriage rides circling the square, offering families a nostalgic way to take in the lights. Shoppers also had the chance to browse the unique “mom and pop” boutiques around the square, supporting local businesses while soaking in the holiday spirit.

The Heart of Tennessee

As the lights twinkled and carols echoed, it was clear why Murfreesboro is known as “The Heart of Tennessee.” Not only is it the geographic center of the state, but it also embodies the warmth and family-style feeling that makes this community special. Friday night’s celebration was more than just a tree lighting—it was a reminder of the joy that comes from gathering together, sharing traditions, and embracing the season.
