Rutherford County, TN - The extended Thanksgiving weekend has kept Middle Tennessee roads busy, with traffic surging as families travel, shop, and gather. For emergency responders, that means giving up their own holiday time to keep others safe.

On Thanksgiving Day, Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department units were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash on I-24 East near the I-840 interchange. Rescue 11 was first on the scene and confirmed that two people were trapped. Firefighters immediately began extrication efforts, successfully freeing both individuals. Crews provided patient care until Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services arrived to transport the victims. One patient was reported in critical condition.

The crash forced a temporary closure of I-24 East (toward Chattanooga) while emergency crews worked the scene. Units involved included Rescue 11, Ladder 11, Engine 9, Rescue 4, Safety 1, Safety 2, and Battalion Chief 2. Their coordinated response ensured that lifesaving care was delivered quickly despite the holiday traffic.

WGNS Radio extends heartfelt gratitude to all emergency responders serving this area. Their dedication, especially during holidays when most are with family, makes a vital difference in the community. As you see responders going the extra mile, WGNS encourages you to nominate them for the Demos’ Outstanding Emergency Responder recognition.

This Thanksgiving, while roads remain crowded and travel continues, the reminder is clear: behind every safe arrival and every lifesaving rescue are men and women who sacrifice their own holiday moments to protect ours.
