Tennessee Ranks 6th for Low Fuel Prices, But Rutherford County Not the Cheapest in the State

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - As gas prices shift across the country, Tennessee drivers can enjoy a small, fuel-scented victory lap. According to AAA, the Volunteer State is officially the 6th cheapest place in America to fill up as of Monday morning at 6 AM. The statewide average for regular unleaded is $2.68 per gallon — inexpensive enough to brag about, but not cheap enough to stop watching the pump like a hawk.

Louisiana edged out Tennessee by a nickel (because apparently that’s all it takes to win now), landing in 5th place. Go one state over and Texans are paying $2.62, a whole six cents less, which earns them the #4 spot. Arkansas is barely cheaper at $2.621 — but a win’s a win, even if it’s measured in fractions that no one at the gas station cares about.

Then comes the real showdown — and it wasn’t even close. Mississippi sits comfortably in 2nd place at $2.60 per gallon, a full 8¢ cheaper than Tennessee. But Oklahoma—land of buffalos, wind, and apparently budget gasoline—wins the gold at just $2.49 per gallon. Yes, the state where bison sightings are more common than red lights is now the reigning champ of cheap fuel, clocking in at 19 cents less than Tennessee.

Local Gas Check: Tennessee Edition OF 87-Octane

  • Rutherford County? $2.69 per gallon — not terrible, not great, just wonderfully average.
  • Bedford County: $2.62 (yes, cheaper than here).
  • Cannon County: $2.84 (that one hurts).
  • Coffee County: $2.68 (tied with state average).
  • Wilson County: $2.66 (a tiny victory).
  • Nashville: $2.77 (you pay more to pump in the city).
  • Henry County, TN: $2.46 (The weekly cheapest in the state).

And once again — still undefeated in losing — Williamson County tops the list. The Franklin/Brentwood zone is proudly ringing up the state’s most expensive gas at $3.06 a gallon (that's regular unleaded). Congratulations on… whatever that is.

Diesel Update (for the heavy-haulers and farm-folks): Tennessee diesel now sits at $3.45 per gallon — 10¢ more than a month ago and 2¢ more than last week. Still, we’re ranked #8 on the cheap diesel scale, which means someone else is still paying more. Texas takes the diesel trophy too, with $3.25 per gallon.

Worst of the Worst Awards:
Most expensive gas? California: $4.66.
Most expensive diesel? Hawaii: $5.17.
And in an ironic twist — they flip for second-most-expensive in the opposite category. So it’s basically the Olympics of paying too much for fuel along the shore and in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
