Murfreesboro, TN - A terrifying moment unfolded early Friday morning (10/31/2025) when a pickup truck lost control on Interstate 840 westbound and flipped over the concrete barrier near mile marker 56.6, landing on Shacklett Road below — just seconds after a school bus had passed beneath the overpass.
The incident happened near the Sulphur Springs Road exit, west of Murfreesboro, and drew a swift response from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the truck’s driver veered off course at the 56-mile marker, causing the vehicle to vault over the edge and crash onto the road below.
Miraculously, the school bus — carrying nineteen students — had just cleared the underpass. While the bus was struck by flying debris, no students were injured. The truck driver also escaped serious harm but was cited for driving without a license, no insurance, and failure to exercise Due Care.
Witnesses and responders alike expressed disbelief at how narrowly tragedy was avoided. “This could have been so much worse,” one official said, shaking their head at the scene.
The timing of the crash — mere seconds separating the falling truck from the passing school bus — left many stunned. Parents were notified, and the students were safely transported from the scene.
Authorities are continuing their investigation. NewsRadio WGNS will keep you informed.
