Thefts of Electric Scooters on the RISE--Secure Yours With STRONG LOCKS!

Murfreesboro, TN - There’s a troubling trend sweeping through Murfreesboro, and it’s rolling in on two wheels. Electric scooters—once a symbol of convenience and eco-friendly travel—are now becoming prime targets for thieves, especially on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.

MTSU Police Chief Ed Kaup confirmed what many students have already noticed that electric scooter thefts are on the rise.

“We took 10 reports of theft of electric scooters in September,” Kaup said, noting that the incidents have occurred at various times throughout the day. The common thread? Scooters were either left unsecured or locked with flimsy, easily breakable devices.

Students and residents alike are being urged to take extra precautions. Police recommend using heavy-duty locks and securing scooters to designated bicycle racks. Some models even offer remote locking features through mobile apps—an added layer of protection that could make all the difference.

Beyond locking up, authorities suggest documenting your scooter. Snap photos, jot down serial numbers, save your purchase receipt, and note any unique identifiers like stickers or decals. These small steps can be crucial in helping law enforcement recover stolen property.

For those navigating campus life, MTSU has laid out clear guidelines for scooter use and storage. Scooters must be parked at bike racks and never inside buildings or blocking walkways. Charging them at university outlets is also prohibited. You can find the full list of rules on MTSU’s Parking Services site.

If your scooter goes missing, don’t wait. Murfreesboro residents should contact the city police at (615) 893-1311. MTSU students should reach out directly to campus police at (615) 898-2424.

As the scooter scene continues to grow, so does the need for vigilance. Whether you’re zipping across campus or cruising through town, a little caution can go a long way in keeping your ride safe.
