MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Four months after an SUV slammed into the side of a dental office on South Church Street across from the Innsbrook Kroger, construction crews are finally wrapping up repairs. Now, a similar incident has taken place across town — this time at a popular eatery near MTSU.
Murfreesboro Police confirmed they were called to the Smoothie King on Middle Tennessee Boulevard this past Friday after a vehicle vs. building crash. According to investigators, a 19-year-old driver accidentally pressed the gas instead of the brake while pulling into a parking space, sending the small Toyota RAV4 crashing into the front of the business.
The impact shattered two large windows and heavily damaged the brick beneath the frames. Remarkably, the small neon “Open” sign inside the store was left dangling intact after the collision.
While the teenage driver was not injured, a store employee was hurt by flying glass. Fortunately, the injury was limited to a minor arm wound, and no further medical emergencies were reported. Authorities noted that while this incident could have been devastating, the outcome was far less severe than it might have been.
As a precaution, Murfreesboro Building & Codes responded to the scene to assess the structure and ensure the safety of the building following the crash. No word on how soon construction crews will be able to make the needed repairs, but it appears that most contractors are behind schedule when it comes to such jobs.
