Murfreesboro, TN - Central Magnet School in Murfreesboro just got a major boost to its technology curriculum, thanks to a new grant from the Tennessee Valley Authority and Bicentennial Volunteers, Inc. The school was selected as one of 179 recipients across the TVA’s seven-state region to receive part of a $655,000 award aimed at supporting youth robotics programs. But what sets Central Magnet apart is its focus on drones—a rapidly growing field with real-world applications in everything from agriculture to emergency response.

The grant will allow Central Magnet to expand its existing drones program, giving students access to more advanced equipment and training. It’s a big win for the school and for Murfreesboro, which continues to be a hub for educational innovation. With 72 teams from five states competing in TVA-sponsored robotics events this year, Central Magnet’s selection highlights the school’s commitment to staying ahead of the curve in STEM education.

TVA’s director of public engagement, Althea Jones, emphasized the importance of investing in young minds. “TVA is proud of our partnership with BVI to support robotics programs throughout the Valley region,” she said. The initiative is part of TVA’s broader mission to strengthen communities through education and workforce development.

TVA itself is no stranger to innovation. As the nation’s largest public power supplier, it serves over 10 million people across the Southeast and operates one of the most diverse energy systems in the country. From nuclear and hydro to solar and advanced technologies, TVA is constantly evolving—and it’s clear they want the next generation to evolve with them.

For Central Magnet students, the grant means more than just new gear. It’s a chance to explore cutting-edge technology, build real-world skills, and maybe even chart a path toward future careers in engineering or aviation. And for Murfreesboro, it’s another sign that local schools are preparing students not just for graduation, but for the future.
