Murfreesboro, TN - Murfreesboro families are invited to kick off the back-to-school season with the “Gear Up and Go” event on Saturday, August 2, 2025, from 10 a.m. to noon at World Outreach. The annual event features a free backpack giveaway, thanks to funding from Redstone Federal Credit Union, which will also provide financial tips to families during the event.
In addition to gearing up students with essential school supplies, the event is loaded with opportunities for parents to learn about child safety and health. Deputies from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office will offer complimentary car seat checks, and the Tennessee Highway Safety Office will bring its popular Seat Belt Convincer to demonstrate the life-saving importance of buckling up.
Participants can also speak with child car seat technicians from 100% Chiropractic and receive a free car seat cleaning courtesy of Buckle and Bright. United Way representatives will be on site to share educational resources for families.
As part of the community outreach, the Sheriff’s Office will collect nonperishable food donations for Rutherford County Schools’ ATLAS program, which supports homeless students throughout the year. Suggested food items include microwaveable meals, snack packs, peanut butter, granola bars, and more.
Deputy Laura Kunce from the Sheriff’s Community Services team says the event is a way to support families with practical tools while encouraging safe and successful starts to the school year.
