Fire at La Vergne Tire Shop Leads to Hazardous Oil Spill

Jun 25, 2025 at 08:55 pm by WGNS

La Vergne, TN - A fire broke out Wednesday (6/25/2025) afternoon at M & A Tire Shop located at 208 Stones River Road, near the intersection with Murfreesboro Road. When La Vergne Fire-Rescue crews arrived, they found a vehicle parked beside the building fully engulfed in flames, which had spread to the structure itself. Firefighters acted quickly to control and extinguish the blaze, but complications arose when a nearby container holding motor oil ruptured during the incident. Crews worked swiftly to contain the spill, but a significant amount of oil escaped, flowing into the roadway and down the storm drain.

Emergency officials, including the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), Rutherford County EMA, and local stormwater management teams, were promptly notified. Together, they coordinated an environmental response that extended well into the evening.

The motor oil spill quickly became the more serious concern. Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) teams were dispatched to prevent further environmental contamination. They deployed absorbent booms and pads to stop the spread of oil and used specialized equipment to assess the extent of the pollution.

All oil and materials collected during the cleanup were classified as hazardous waste and transported to certified disposal facilities. According to environmental experts, just one quart of motor oil can contaminate up to 250,000 gallons of water — underscoring the urgency of Wednesday’s response.

La Vergne Fire-Rescue remained on scene late into the night ensuring the site and surrounding stormwater systems were safe. TEMA is expected to release a detailed report in the coming days.
