MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) — After four decades as a cornerstone of Murfreesboro’s bar and music scene, The Boro Bar and Grill will officially close its doors on Friday, July 5, as owner Lee Roberts prepares to retire.

The news was confirmed to WGNS Radio in a phone call with the business, which verified that the longtime local favorite will end its run next month.

The announcement comes just weeks after The Boro celebrated its 40th anniversary on June 3, marking exactly 40 years since it first opened in 1985 on Greenland Drive near the MTSU campus.

The Boro has been a go-to spot for generations of Middle Tennessee State University students and Murfreesboro locals, known for its live music, casual atmosphere and karaoke nights. It’s also remembered as one of the city’s few venues consistently showcasing local bands and original artists.

Before becoming The Boro Bar and Grill, the building housed Armondo’s, a spaghetti and pizza restaurant. When Roberts took over in 1985, he transformed it into what would become one of the most iconic hangouts, especially for MTSU students.

While the bar will remain open through July 5, patrons are encouraged to stop by in the coming weeks to relive memories and say goodbye. Any closing week events or farewell celebrations will be announced via The Boro’s social media pages.
