RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN – What began as an ordinary Sunday drive on Interstate 24 in Rutherford County turned into a scene of tragedy and chaos, as traffic came to a complete halt following the discovery of a man shot and killed inside a vehicle.
Just before 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, 2025, Rutherford County emergency dispatchers received a chilling report: a man was found unresponsive inside a vehicle on I-24 East, near mile marker 64.8 and the Waldron Road exit. Within minutes, the highway transformed into a high-alert crime scene.
When law enforcement and emergency responders arrived, they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside the vehicle. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed the incident was, indeed, a fatal shooting.
The response included deputies from the Sheriff’s Office, La Vergne Police, Tennessee Highway Patrol officers, and paramedics from Rutherford County EMS. As a result of the investigation, traffic was rerouted to Waldron Road from approximately 4:30 to 7:00 p.m., as authorities worked the scene, collecting evidence and securing the area.
As of 9:15 p.m. Sunday, the Sheriff’s Office confirmed, “One man died after he was found suffering gunshot wounds.” No further information about the victim or possible suspects has been released, and investigators remain in the preliminary stages of the case.
Residents are urged to remain alert and report any information that may assist in the investigation. WGNS will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as they become available.
