MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – One of Tennessee’s biggest and most anticipated high school sports events is returning to Rutherford County! Spring Fling will take place May 20–23, bringing an Olympic-style atmosphere to Murfreesboro and the surrounding areas as state champions are crowned in baseball, softball, boys soccer, track and field, and tennis.

This four-day event is expected to welcome over 43,000 athletes, families, and fans from across Tennessee. With so many visitors coming to town, the economic impact is significant...That was Thomas Laird, Assistant Director of the Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department.

The annual event brings an estimated $4.8 million to the local economy. This impact is felt by restaurants, retailers, and other local businesses that benefit from the influx of visitors of all ages. For example, hotels throughout the area are fully booked well in advance of guests arriving to watch the variety of competitions…Hotels reaching full capacity is always a welcome boost for the local economy.

Visitors include student-athletes, their parents, grandparents, and often extended family. In addition, coaches, referees, and teachers who support their schools also travel to attend the games.

But Spring Fling is about more than just competition—it’s a celebration of student achievement, sportsmanship, and community spirit. And to ensure its continued success, the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce says that volunteers are needed now more than ever.

Organizers are calling on local residents, business leaders, parents, and students to get involved. Volunteers are needed to assist with logistics, hospitality, ticketing, and general event support throughout the week. Whether you can give a few hours or a few days, your contribution makes a meaningful difference.

One local resident shared, “This is a fantastic opportunity to support our youth, showcase our community’s spirit, and be part of an event that leaves a lasting impression on visitors.”

More Than Spring Fling: Local parks truly shine during events like Spring Fling, showcasing their quality and capacity to host large-scale competitions. This visibility often leads to additional tournaments sponsored by organizations outside of Tennessee’s school districts. Past successes translate directly into more tournament action within the local park system.

For example, organizations like Major League Soccer (MLS) bring a full showcase of tournament-style games to the ‘Boro during their annual visit...That was Parks Director Nate Williams. The list of sporting events held within the local parks system is extensive, ranging from the Special Olympics to the upcoming TSSAA Spring Fling.

In closing, the parent of a student-athlete from West Tennessee summed it up best, saying, “It’s impressive.” Sometimes, the simplest statements carry the most weight—and there's not much more to add to such a genuine compliment.
