RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WGNS) — A joint investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury has led to the arrest of Don Hong, a professor at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), on multiple charges including theft, forgery, and official misconduct.
It is important to note that MTSU’s Office of Audit and Consulting Services first brought these concerns to the attention of the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury. In addition, reports show that the University cooperated extensively with the Comptroller's Office in its investigation.
Officals at MTSU stress, "The allegations brought forth are serious and, if proven true, we will act quickly and appropriately in the best interest of the University and its students."
The investigation began on May 9, 2024, at the request of 16th Judicial District Attorney General Jennings Jones, after allegations surfaced regarding financial crimes against MTSU students. Investigators reviewed Hong’s personal financial records and determined that, between 2020 and 2024, he allegedly used his university position to steal state funds.
On Monday, a Rutherford County grand jury indicted Hong on the following charges:
-
Two counts of Theft
-
One count of Forgery
-
One count of Criminal Simulation
-
One count of Official Misconduct
-
One count of Official Oppression
-
One count of Retaliation
On Wednesday, Hong was booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center with bond set at $500,000.
Authorities emphasize that the charges are allegations only and do not constitute evidence of guilt. Hong is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
