NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WGNS) — Tennessee lawmakers are looking into whether the state should take control of the TSSAA or shut it down completely.
The Senate bill passed April 7th by a 25-4 vote and was sent to the House. Their bill was pulled last Thursday (4-17-2025) just after WGNS' Bryan Barrett was talking with State Representative Mike Sparks (R-Smyrna) on the air about the legislation. Sparks said that generally happens when there's not enough support to pass the bill. It was sent to summer study where lawmakers could make changes and propose new laws in 2026.
In March, the TSSAA changed its own rules to allow a one-time transfer for reasons like academics or mental health, as long as it’s not for sports or disciplinary reasons.
The TSSAA, which has governed high school sports in Tennessee since 1925, has not responded publicly.
