RUTHERFORD COUNTY — A fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms swept through Rutherford County Thursday evening between 5 and 7 p.m., bringing high winds, scattered hail, and several power outages.

The hardest-hit area appeared to be La Vergne, where nearly 5,000 customers were without electricity at one point, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES) outage map. Crews worked into the evening to restore power to affected neighborhoods.

Strong winds were reported across the county, with some minor damage noted. A photo provided by Sam Campbell shows the tarp on the Rockvale High School baseball field being lifted and tossed by the storm’s strong gusts as the system moved through.

In addition to wind, small hail was reported in various parts of the county. A brief storm ahead of the main line dropped hail around the area of Lascassas Pike and Rutherford Boulevard in Murfreesboro. Several residents described the hail as being roughly the size of “Sonic ice.”

Fortunately, the threat of severe weather has passed. The extended forecast includes only slight chances for rain Monday night and again next Thursday.
