Murfreesboro, Tenn. - The Murfreesboro City Council will convene for a Regular Workshop meeting on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. The session will take place in the Community Room of the Municipal Airport Business Center, located at 1930 Memorial Blvd.
One of the topics on the agenda involves proposed changes to the city’s sign ordinance. These updates focus on allowing *Electronic Message Centers (EMCs), which can display text, images, and other information electronically. Currently, EMCs are not permitted under the existing ordinance. However, the proposed revisions aim to modernize regulations and introduce more flexible options for signage. These changes could benefit businesses by improving visibility, enhancing communication, and even fostering community engagement through dynamic messaging.
Reports suggest that EMCs could also serve public safety functions, such as broadcasting emergency alerts and traffic updates. A portable EMC system would make it possible to place messages strategically around the city, depending on the situation and need. City officials are currently seeking input from the Council, business owners and citizens as they work to finalize the new ordinance.
City Council members, alongside various City staff departments, will also address a range of important topics and action items during the meeting. Among the scheduled action items is the second reading of Ordinance 23-0-30, which proposes amendments to Chapter 4 of the City Code concerning alcoholic beverages. Also up for discussion are upgrades to the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department’s Mobile Data Terminals and a resolution supporting the Central Tennessee Regional Solid Waste Planning Board.
Workshop discussions are expected to cover a wide array of municipal issues, including a preview of the City Schools budget and reviews of water and sewer rate designs. Additionally, the Council will examine proposed solid waste and stormwater fee adjustments and discuss the General Fund’s payroll impact on the City’s financial forecasts.
Further financial reviews will include Capital Improvement Project (CIP) transfers and performance dashboards for January and February 2025.
The public is encouraged to stay informed on these discussions as the Council continues to shape the direction of city services and financial planning.
