MURFREESBORO, TN – Thanks to the swift response of the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department (MFRD) on Tuesday, a large grass fire threatening newly built homes was quickly contained and extinguished earlier today, ensuring that no property was harmed.
Reports of the fire emerged around midday at the intersection of Virtue Avenue and Effie Seward Drive, prompting MFRD B Shift to dispatch Engines 5 and 7, Ladder 11, Rescue 11, Safety 1, and Battalion Chief 2 to the scene. Upon arrival, Engine 5 crews were met with fire and smoke encroaching upon four surrounding homes.
Firefighters worked diligently to combat the flames and successfully extinguished the blaze before it could spread further, thus preventing potential property damage. Meanwhile, the Fire Marshal’s Office remained on-site to conduct a routine investigation into the cause of the fire.
Grass fires pose a severe risk, especially during hot and dry weather conditions, and many incidents can be attributed to human activity. MFRD urges the public to take preventive measures to avoid starting grass fires. Key recommendations include never discarding cigarette butts improperly, refraining from leaving glass bottles in dry grass, and avoiding BBQs or open flames in grassy areas where embers can ignite vegetation. Additionally, safely disposing of disposable BBQs is crucial, as they remain hot long after use.
“MFRD encourages everyone to be fire smart and help protect our community,” according to a department press release after the incident. As always, prompt action in reporting signs of fire can safeguard lives and property.
As the investigation continues, the community remains thankful for the quick and effective response of their local firefighters, who managed to turn a potentially devastating situation into a success story of safety and vigilance.
