Murfreesboro, TN — The Rutherford County Board of Education has taken a bold step toward improving student outcomes by passing a resolution advocating for the integration of Critical Thinking, Chess, and Conflict Resolution into Tennessee schools. This initiative aims to equip students with essential problem-solving and decision-making skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

The resolution formally urges Governor Bill Lee to allocate funding for a pilot program in Rutherford County, which will serve as a proof of concept for a broader statewide implementation. If approved, this program will be developed in collaboration with local higher education institutions, ensuring a research-backed approach to enhancing student success.

“With the rapid changes in today’s world, students must develop critical thinking skills to navigate challenges, resolve conflicts, and make informed decisions,” said Rob Mitchell, Rutherford County Assessor of Property. “By incorporating chess and conflict resolution into education, we are preparing our children to be strategic thinkers and effective leaders. Without the ardent support of Board Chairman Claire Maxwell, Board Member Caleb Tidwell, County Commissioners Wayne Irvin, Craig Harris, and State Representative Mike Sparks, we would not be this close to changing lives for the better.”

The goal is to launch the pilot program by the Fall 2025 school year, providing Tennessee students with innovative tools to improve academic performance, social skills, and future career readiness.
