Founded in 1971, the SAC began as a vision inspired by Patsy Brown, who felt called to create a welcoming place where active older adults could gather. Over the years, the center has flourished, now boasting over 700 members. However, the last three years have seen unprecedented growth, and projections indicate membership will exceed 1,000 by 2027. This surge in participation has underscored the urgent need for a larger facility. Currently, the center’s building can accommodate up to 200 people at one time, a capacity that is insufficient for the array of programs and activities offered.

In a generous show of support, the Town of Smyrna has gifted the center five acres of land, providing a foundation for this exciting project. Preliminary plans for the new building are underway, envisioning a space that will not only serve today’s seniors but also future generations.

“It is often said that the older one becomes, the less relevant they are,” said a spokesperson for the center. “Our mission is to educate, engage, and enhance the lives of older adults. By building this new facility, we ensure that seniors in Rutherford and surrounding counties will have a vibrant and supportive place to connect, learn, and thrive.”

The SAC offers a packed calendar of activities and events: (smyrnaseniorcenter.org/activities/), reflecting its dedication to fostering community and enriching the lives of its members. From day trips to exciting destinations like the Sierra Snow Train, Shades of Ireland, and Sunny San Diego, to local programs and workshops, the center is a hub of activity and joy.

The capital campaign’s slogan, “Building on the Legacy” highlights the universal journey of aging and the importance of building a strong foundation for the future. All donations to the campaign are tax-deductible and can be made at www.buildingonthelegacy.com   or mailed to Senior Activity Center,  100 Raikes Street, Smyrna TN 37167.
