NASHVILLE, Tenn. – BFI Waste Systems of Tennessee, LLC, operating Middle Point Landfill, announced Tuesday that it has dropped its appeal regarding the Central Tennessee Solid Waste Regional Board’s 2021 decision to deny the application for northern expansion.
“The decision to drop our appeal demonstrates our full commitment to working collaboratively with county leaders to develop a solution that reflects the long-term goals of Rutherford County. We believe that pursuing an appeal for northern expansion no longer aligns with this mission; therefore, we have decided to no longer pursue it,” said Area Director Mike Classen.
If approved, the northern expansion would have allowed the facility to extend toward Jefferson Pike. The alternative, the Rutherford County First vision—first presented to the Rutherford County Commission’s Public Works Committee on February 11—would permit an operation approximately half the size of the current facility to expand away from the view of Jefferson Pike, while providing a variety of additional economic and community benefits. This plan requires BFI to acquire the old Rutherford County Landfill and fill the valley between the two properties, effectively combining them into one facility.
