RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - While WGNS routinely reports the weekly fluctuations in gas and diesel prices for the state of Tennessee, we don’t highlight the price of recharging your electric vehicle (EV) quite enough. So, buckle up, because today’s the day for EV drivers!

To start this update, we’ll first bring you up-to-date on the current U.S. average for recharging in America. As of Monday, January 6, 2025, the average recharging price is equivalent to $0.34 per gallon! For those attempting to do the math in your head, electric drivers are currently saving $2.72 per gallon compared to the current U.S. average price of gas, which is sitting at $3.06 for regular unleaded. For luxury auto drivers using premium-grade fuel, EV drivers are saving the equivalent of $3.54 per gallon because premium fuel across America is currently averaging $3.88 at the pump.

If you refuel with gas in Tennessee, you pay the equivalent of $2.74 per gallon for regular unleaded. Broken down, that means Tennesseans are paying about $2.34 per gallon more for gas than they are to recharge an EV. Overall, Tennessee currently ranks about 44th on the list of cheapest states to recharge in (using public chargers). In other words, while the price to recharge an EV in Tennessee is cheaper than the cost to refuel with gas, the cost to recharge in Tennessee is nowhere near the cheapest in the country.

The state with the lowest cost of recharging is Kansas, where 536 public charging stations stand at the ready. There, the cost per kilowatt-hour is only $0.22. The state with the most expensive cost of charging an EV is Hawaii, where the cost per kilowatt-hour adds up to $0.56. Hawaii has a total of 114 public charging stations, according to AAA, the Auto Club.
