Why are there so many crashes?

Murfreesboro, TN - It’s true that Christmas tends to be a bit safer on the roads compared to other holidays like Thanksgiving and the 4th of July, which are notorious for higher traffic fatalities. However, recent events in Murfreesboro have been concerning. There have been several serious accidents, including a fatal crash on Broad near 840 and another serious accident in the Florence Road area. Just yesterday, there was a roll-over multi-vehicle crash with injuries on Broad.

That incident may have been a T-bond crash brought on by running a traffic signal.

T-bone collisions, also known as side-impact or broadside collisions, are particularly dangerous because the sides of vehicles offer much less protection compared to the front and rear. The impact can cause severe injuries or fatalities, especially to the occupants on the side that is struck.

These accidents often occur at intersections when one driver fails to yield or runs a red light, leading to a collision with another vehicle crossing the intersection. The force of the impact can result in serious injuries such as fractures, internal organ damage, and traumatic brain injuries.

Running a red light is not new for 'Boro motorists, it goes hand-in-hand with trying to get as many vehicles through a "caution" and "early red light" as possible. Usually, that simply causes frustration for drivers attempting to move forward from the opposite lanes of traffic. However, in some cases--running a red light creates a "T-bond crash".

It's crucial to always be vigilant at intersections and follow traffic signals to minimize the risk of such accidents.

MPD Seeking Public's Help To Find Witness to Wednesday Crash  

In addition to the Friday crash, Murfreesboro Police Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) is urgently seeking witnesses to a fatal three-car collision that occurred on just before 1:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon (12/4/2024) on outbound NW Broad Street near I-840.

Investigators request that anyone who might have witnessed the crash to contact FACT investigator Officer Derrick Bush by email at 0867@murfreesborotn.gov.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the female driver of a 2020 Kia Rio may have improperly changed lanes, resulting in a collision with a 2015 Kia Optima. Both vehicles were traveling south on NW Broad Street. The impact forced the Kia Rio to veer into the northbound lanes. It was then struck by a 2013 Volkswagen Beetle. Debris from the collision also hit a Chrysler minivan traveling northbound.
The 24-year-old female driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators will release her identity in coordination with the family. No one else was injured.
