“At Big Brothers Big Sisters, our mission is to equip and empower, which is the foundation of the College Advancement Program,” said Melissa Hudson-Gant, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee. “While the transition from high school to college can be exciting, it can also be challenging for many students. CAP will equip students with valuable resources and empower them to navigate the transition into college life, providing them with the foundation and support needed to succeed in their academic journey.”

CAP one-on-one mentoring matches mentors from Middle Tennessee with first-year, college-age mentees based on shared interests, similar life experiences and professional goals. Mentees receive weekly virtual check-ins and in-person meetings with their mentor and attend small group mentoring sessions throughout the semester.

Program mentors are established professionals with demonstrated success in their career and receive training from BBBSMT staff that help them effectively support their mentees. Matches are supported directly by BBBSMT staff with regularly scheduled check-ins throughout the semester.

This month, BBBSMT will launch the first cohort of matches at Tennessee State University and host the first EmpowerU session on campus on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

All students at participating schools, regardless of age, are eligible to attend any of the EmpowerU micro-mentoring sessions throughout the semester. During each session, students will connect over a shared meal, learn skills for success from a chosen speaker and participate in small group mentoring.
