MURFREESBORO, TN - Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health issues in the United States, often existing alongside depression. Recent data from a comprehensive 17-month survey released this year highlights the growing concern surrounding mental health in adolescents. The survey revealed that 21% of adolescents aged 12 to 17 reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety, while 17% reported symptoms of depression.
The findings also pointed to a significant gender disparity in the prevalence of these conditions. According to the National Health Interview Survey, 30.6% of female respondents reported experiencing anxiety symptoms, compared to 12.3% of males. The gender gap was similarly evident in reports of depression, with 25.1% of females aged 12 to 17 showing symptoms, while only 10.1% of males reported experiencing similar issues. While those statistics may sound high, several other studies reported even higher findings of depression and anxiety among the younger generation.
These statistics underscore the need for increased awareness, early intervention, and accessible mental health resources for adolescents. With anxiety and depression often occurring together, addressing one condition can play a crucial role in mitigating the other.
