RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - Rutherford County teens may enroll in the free Defense Response Improving Vehicle Education (D.R.I.V.E.) driving class taught by Rutherford County Sheriff’s school resource officers. Sheriff’s SROs sponsor the free DRIVE class for teen drivers to teach them through an online class Friday night and a driving course Saturday several times a year.
SRO Chad Dodson, who coordinates the program, said students participate in an online class to learn about driver responsibilities, distracted driving, vehicle dynamics, intoxicating substances, driver’s license laws and restrictions and driving courtesy. The SROs instruct the students on a driving course on evasive maneuvers, parallel parking, threshold and emergency braking, cornering and angled parking.
Students must have a driver’s license or learner’s permit and proof of insurance. They should bring a vehicle they plan to drive. Parents interested in registering their teens for the class may email Dodson at cdodson@rcsotn.org.
