Murfreesboro, TN - A giant oak near the entrance to Evergreen Cemetery was uprooted and downed by Monday afternoon's storms that came through the community. The National Weather Service in Nashville surveyed the damage and determined it was a weak EF-0 tornado with winds up to 75 mph that did the damage there.
Evergreen is open today, but officials closed it Monday out of fear that some of the damaged trees could fall.
Christy indicated that most of the damage was in the older sections of Evergreen, and they have had crews clearing the debris from the area.
What are thought to be unmarked slave graves in Section E also had some tree damage, but the old metal monument in that area was knocked on its side and dented more. Despite numerous searches by MTSU's ground penetrating radar, the background on the mysterious metal marker with only one readable word, "CARRIE", remains an unsolved mystery.
