NASHVILLE, TN - Nashville Homicide Unit detectives are investigating an apparent attempted murder-suicide involving gunfire inside a residence in the 2100 block of Burns Street.

Metro Police Officers responded Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at 7:20 a.m. to shots fired. They found two men, step-brothers, with gunshot wounds. The preliminary investigation shows that Carson Denny, 38, arrived at the residence of his step brother, Chandler Barnes, 27, in a rented pickup truck. Chandler’s fiancé left the residence to go to work and was approached by Denny who was armed with a gun and demanded to go inside. Once inside he shot Barnes and then returned to the pickup truck. As Barnes’ fiancé got him out of the residence so she could take him to the hospital, Denny returned and again fired at Barnes, striking him multiple times. Denny returned to the pickup where he turned the gun on himself. He died at the scene. A nine-millimeter pistol was recovered in his lap.

Tuesday Night's Murder-Suicide at Cane Ridge Pkwy Apartment Complex Involved Husband and Wife

NASHVILLE, TN - Just barely over the Rutherford County line in Antioch, a Tuesday night murder-suicide at an apartment complex on Cane Ridge Parkway involved a husband who fatally shot his wife multiple times before fatally shooting himself.

The murder victim is identified as 24-year-old Tatayana Smith. Her deceased husband is identified as Theodore Smith, age 37.

South Precinct officers were called to Vintage Century Farms Apartments at 8:55 p.m. on a report of arguing, screaming and gunshots being heard outside one of the units. Officers found both individuals dead when they arrived.

From the investigation thus far and witness information, detectives learned that Theodore Smith had gotten dressed to go to his job as a local hotel security guard. He asked his wife to step outside in the hallway to speak with her. Arguing was then heard. A witness was able to de-escalate the confrontation and convince Theodore Smith to briefly walk away. He then turned around, pushed the victim into a corner, unholstered a semi-automatic pistol, and shot his wife multiple times. He then walked back into the apartment, retrieved another pistol, and shot the victim several more times before killing himself.

Tatayana and Theodore Smith had no domestic violence history with the MNPD.
