La Vergne, TN - Five members of the La Vergne Police Department returned on July 19 from a deployment assignment at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The RNC, held every four years since 1856, is a major event where the Republican Party nominates its presidential candidate. This year, the La Vergne officers were invited by the Milwaukee Police Department to assist with security.

Donald Trump accepted the party's nomination for a third time, which could lead to a second term as President of the United States. His acceptance speech was given a matter of days after surviving an assassination attempt. Five days before his speech, Trump was grazed by a bullet above his ear, narrowly avoiding a fatal injury by less than an inch.

The participating LaVergne Police officers at the RNC included Chief Christopher Moews, Lt. David Durham, Lt. Eric Staats, Sgt. Bill Timson, and Patrol Officer Kyler Cline. Chief Moews led a Field Force Platoon of 40 law enforcement officers, who were responsible for managing protests in downtown Milwaukee's Red Arrow Park and providing security around the event's perimeter. The other officers focused on internal venue security and escorting dignitaries.

Chief Moews expressed his pride in the team, stating, "This was an honor for LPD to be part of the security presence at the RNC. I am proud of their willingness to serve their country and to represent the City of La Vergne with honor and distinction. I hope we are able to accept more opportunities like this in the future."

The costs for the deployment, including travel and accommodations, were covered by the City of Milwaukee through federal funding provided for this national security event.
