MURFREESBORO, TN - With the 4th of July on Thursday, calls to the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department (MFRD) are expected to spike. The department is urging residents to take necessary precautions to keep themselves and others safe. Each year, MFRD personnel respond to several fires started by fireworks, as well as fireworks-related injury accidents.
For residents of the City of Murfreesboro, fireworks are only permitted within city limits on July 3rd, 4th, and 5th between the hours of 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. Seasonal sales of fireworks within the city limits are only allowed from June 28 to July 5 from State-approved retailers. To ensure compliance and safety, MFRD’s Fire Marshal’s Office inspected 16 fireworks retail sites on Wednesday, June 26.
The Murfreesboro Fire Department typically handles a high volume of incidents. In June, there were a total of 1,863 incidents, including 39 fire calls and 1,024 rescue or EMS incidents. False alarm calls were significant as well, with 125 reported. In comparison, May saw a total of 1,899 calls, with 15 being fire-related and 1,081 categorized as rescue or EMS incidents.
MFRD anticipates an increase in calls related to fireworks as the Independence Day celebrations approach. The department emphasizes the importance of following safety guidelines and being aware of the local regulations on fireworks usage.
Murfreesboro residents are reminded to adhere to the designated times for fireworks and to purchase only from state-approved retailers. By taking these precautions, the community can enjoy a safe and festive holiday while minimizing the risk of fire and injury.
