MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – In an episode straight out of a comedy sketch, Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD) detectives are on the lookout for three masterminds who clearly didn't major in criminal logistics. These intrepid individuals attempted the bold feat of prying open an ATM with a stolen truck and a crowbar. However, they did not get any money.
Officers rushed to the scene at the Ascend Federal Credit Union on W. Clark Blvd. at the precisely 1:50 a.m. on Sunday, responding to a burglary alarm. What they found was an ATM that looked like it had survived an amateur wrestling match. Despite the damage, the ATM remained stubbornly intact, much to the would-be robbers' chagrin.
Surveillance footage provides a play-by-play of the errors that were apparently made at a fouled attempt to break into the machine. One of the men attempted to pry open the ATM with his crowbar, while his sidekick attached a chain to the tow hitch of a red GMC Sierra pickup truck. One important detail of the early morning excitement - - the truck was stolen. The driver, evidently a graduate of the "Fast and Furious" school of getaway driving, tried to yank the ATM loose. Instead, the chain broke, leaving the ATM unscathed and the criminals empty-handed. Defeated, the three amigos fled the scene, perhaps to rethink their life choices.
Now, the Murfreesboro Police Department Criminal Investigations Division detectives are on the case, hunting down these paragons of criminal masterminds.
