During the second portion of the podcast, Dr. Donny Walker, an assistant biology professor at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), joins students Tatyana Martinez and Ian Wilson to discuss their participation in the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. This summer, the team is conducting research on the impact of fungal pathogens on the microbiomes of reptiles and amphibians. The REU program provides valuable research internships for undergraduates, including stipends, travel, and housing. Dr. Walker emphasizes the importance of exposing students to active research to develop future scientists. Those interested in pursuing placement in a future REU should reach out to the university’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at https://mtsu.edu/research/, the Undergraduate Research Center at https://mtsu.edu/urc/ and the Honors College at https://mtsu.edu/honors/.
