Murfreesboro, TN – The community is invited to attend a Celebration of Patriotism as the Rutherford County Historical Society offers a free talk on FLAG DAY at 7:00pm this coming Monday evening at Oaklands Mansion (900 N. Maney Ave). Historical Society President Pettus Read said, “County Historian Greg Tucker who will talk on Flags and the Endowment.”

Flag Day is a holiday in the United States that's celebrated annually on June 14th. This year, the celebration falls on Friday, June 14, 2024. The day commemorates the adoption of the American flag by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. This significant event, marked by the Flag Resolution, established that "the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation." This iconic design symbolizes the unity and history of the nation.

In addition to celebrating the flag, Flag Day also marks the birthday of the United States Army. On June 14, 1775, the Continental Congress officially adopted the American Continental Army, laying the groundwork for the country's military forces. This dual celebration underscores the deep connection between the American flag and the nation's commitment to freedom and defense.

Flag Day's official recognition began in 1916 when President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation designating June 14 as Flag Day. The observance gained further recognition on August 3, 1949, when an Act of Congress officially established National Flag Day. Although it is not a federal holiday, Title 36 of the United States Code allows the president to proclaim its observance annually, adding to the day’s national significance.

Pennsylvania holds a special place in the history of Flag Day celebrations. On June 14, 1937, Pennsylvania became the first state to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday, starting in the town of Rennerdale. New York also honors Flag Day, designating the second Sunday in June as a state holiday.

Event on Monday Evening: Rutherford County Commissioner and Historical Society President Pettus Read encourages the public to wear their favorite patriotic clothes, especially red, white and blue! And thanks to the Rutherford County Historical Society, this Monday night at 7PM will be filled with flag waving and patriotism!

Read concluded, “Let’s come together to honor our nation’s flag and celebrate the enduring values it represents.”
