REMINDER -THIS WEEKEND: MURFREESBORO, TN - Observed annually on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day holds significant historical importance in the United States. Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, serves as a reminder of the bravery and selflessness displayed by countless individuals throughout American history. It is a time to remember and honor the many U.S. Veterans who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Services.
As the nation prepares to celebrate Memorial Day this coming weekend, Rutherford County residents will have a special opportunity to honor fallen heroes through the annual Healing Fields, Flags of Remembrance event. Organized by the Exchange Club of Rutherford County for the past 15-years, this heartfelt tribute will see over 400 American Flags lining the open acreage next to First United Methodist Church (265 West Thompson Lane) in Murfreesboro this Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Melissa Wright and her husband Don have long helped with the Healing Fields and she recalled one of the many touching sites she has witnessed at the event...The elderly Veteran said that this was probably the last time he'd get to salute those he served with.
The display will be set up early Saturday morning, with each flag mounted on an 8-foot pole. 400 Plus flags will be arranged in a precise military grid...
The flags are purchased by community members, each representing an individual. Sponsors often personalize their flags by attaching cards with descriptions of the loved ones they are honoring. This gesture transforms the Healing Fields into a touching mosaic of personal stories and sacrifices, fostering a deeper connection to the meaning of Memorial Day...
The Healing Fields event not only commemorates the sacrifices of the fallen but also provides a space for reflection and community unity. Visitors can walk among the rows of flags, read the stories, and pay their respects. It’s an event that encapsulates the spirit of Memorial Day, reminding everyone of the cost of freedom and the valor of those who have served.
The American Flags will be not only lighted at night, but also guarded...
