According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), KIA is recalling a large number of 2020 through 2024 Telluride SUVs. The vehicle is apparently known to roll away due to a disengaged driveshaft. Recall information states, "The intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft may not be fully engaged, which can result in vehicle roll away while in PARK." A vehicle that rolls away upon exiting could potentially lead to unintended injuries if it rolls into a bystander.

The impacted number of SUVs add up to over 427-thousand vehicles in the United States. Owner's of these vehicles are strongly advised to engage the parking brake before exiting the vehicle until the damaged shaft and parking brake software can be fixed and updated. Notification letters are expected to be mailed to the owners of the troubled SUVs on May 15, 2024. Again, Owners of these vehicles are encouraged to ensure their parking brake is engaged before exiting the SUV.

According to information surrounding the recall, the KIA North America Safety Office identified customer complaints about the transmission not holding in park 2-years ago. Details from the NHTSA show KIA acknowledged the complaints during routine data monitoring in April of 2022. The company escalated their concern for further investigating 2-months later, followed by 15-months of monitoring, a collection of parts for evaluation and updates to the Department of Transportation's' safety office. On March 13th of this year, 23-months after KIA began monitoring the potential issue, the company decided to move forward with a Telluride SUV recall, which was released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on March 20, 2024.
