Victim in a Saturday Homicide has been Identified - Suspect Arrested

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A convicted felon has been arrested by homicide detectives with the Murfreesboro Police Department Criminal Investigations Division after he was accused of shooting and killing a man this past weekend.

The accused shooter, 44-year-old Corey Lillard Sr., has been charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, felony possession of a schedule II drug (suspected fentanyl), drug paraphernalia, and maintaining a dwelling for drug use.

The victim who died in the shooting has been identified as 23-year-old Davion Gates.  Gates was found in the driveway of a E. Vine Street home near a rear carport with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.  MPD officers rendered first aid while they waited for Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department firefighters and Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services personnel (RCEMS) to arrive on scene. Gates was taken to the hospital by RCEMS where he died from his injuries.

The shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 9. The homicide is possibly related to a dispute between the parties, according to the MPD. 

Lillard Sr. is being held in the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on $994,000 bond.  A hearing is set June 3 in Rutherford County General Sessions Court.
