Rutherford County, TN - UPDATED: As Election Day draws to a close in Rutherford County on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, the results from the March primaries paint a clear picture of the political landscape. Nationally, President Joe Biden secured a decisive victory among Democrats, garnering over 90% of the votes, while Donald Trump emerged as the preferred candidate for Republicans, capturing over 76% of the count.

In the Town of Smyrna, a significant ballot question regarding the amendment of the criminal courts charter saw 71% of voters rejecting the proposal, opting to maintain the existing court system for General Sessions Court proceedings, including criminal cases arising from Smyrna arrests. In other words, Smyrna will keep their courts as is. 

Turning to local races, incumbent Rob Mitchell emerged victorious in the Rutherford County Assessor of Property race, securing 66% of the vote against challenger Virgil Gammon. In the county school board race for Zone 2, Stan Vaught prevailed over Nicolas Rourke with 66% of the votes. Similarly, Caleb Tidwell secured over 64% of the votes in Zone 3, while incumbent Claire D. Maxwell retained her seat in Zone 5 with an overwhelming 98% of the votes. In Zone 6, Butch Vaughn clinched victory with 72% of the vote.

On the Democratic ticket, no candidates contested the Rutherford County Assessor of Property race, and several zones in the county school board race lacked Democratic candidates. Tiffany Fee emerged as the sole contender in Zone 3, receiving 98.62% of the vote.

As the night concludes, it becomes evident that incumbents and Republican candidates are poised for success in several key races. Rob Mitchell is set to retain his position as County Property Assessor, while Stan Vaught and Claire D. Maxwell secure wins for Zones 2 and 5, respectively. Butch Vaughn's victory in Zone 6 and Greg Brooks' retention of the Road Superintendent seat highlight the Republican stronghold in local politics.
