MURFREESBORO, TN - Anticipation is mounting as progress continues on the forthcoming skate park set to grace Murfreesboro. The future facility, dedicated to skateboard enthusiasts, is earmarked for construction within the expansive confines of Old Fort Park—a sprawling 50-acre green space nestled alongside Old Fort Parkway in Murfreesboro.

Skating aficionados can look forward to a purpose-built haven tailored to their passion, situated in a park known for its diversity of activities (walking trails, playgrounds, tennis, softball). The skate park is a pivotal addition to Murfreesboro's recreational landscape.

According to Nate Williams, the Director of Parks and Recreation, substantial strides have been made in materializing the project. A proposed bid has been meticulously crafted to align with the stringent requirements of building not only the skate park but also a complementary pump track for bikers and scooter riders. The project encompasses the construction of a sidewalk and minimal landscaping to enhance the overall park experience.

Williams was pleased to announce that at least two bids have been received within the acceptable price range—a crucial milestone in advancing the project... The financial commitment to this endeavor is just shy of $900 thousand, a worthy investment in fostering a healthier atmosphere for the youth in the community.

Skate parks are recognized for promoting an active lifestyle among teens and young adults, diverting them from sedentary indoor activities like video gaming. With an emphasis on outdoor recreation, the skate park aims to mitigate health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle.

Beyond the physical benefits, the future skate park holds promise as a social hub—a potential home away from home for some. It's envisioned as a space where new friendships are forged, and new skills are acquired. For others, the park serves as a positive outlet for energy, steering them away from negative influences and misguided decisions.

A distinctive feature accompanying the skate park is the planned pump track—a purpose-built cycling track featuring banked turns and rolling hills. This track enables riders on bikes or scooters to generate momentum through skillful pumping movements, adding a dynamic element to the recreational offerings.

While the progress of the project faced some delays attributable to challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, it's now back on track. Originally slated for a summer 2023 opening, the current momentum suggests that skateboarders may be gracing the ramps of the new park by late summer 2024. The community eagerly awaits the transformation of this vision into a vibrant reality, offering a recreational pit-stop for skateboard enthusiasts and contributing to the health and well-being of Murfreesboro's youth.
