RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - In a heartwarming display of community spirit and appreciation for law enforcement, the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Association recently celebrated its volunteers and highlighted their impactful contributions to various Sheriff’s Office programs at their annual Christmas dinner.

The association, comprised of thirty-five graduates from the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy, has become an essential support network for the Sheriff’s Office. These dedicated individuals generously volunteer their time to assist with programs such as the Senior Citizens Awareness Network (SCAN) and contribute to various community-oriented activities throughout the year.

During the annual Christmas dinner, held in the festive spirit of the season, Alumni Association President Kedric Rutz took the opportunity to review the achievements of 2023 and express the association's mission. “What we are all about is to assist the Sheriff’s Office and let everybody know we appreciate first responders and what law enforcement officers do,” Rutz stated. “We thank you for your service to the community and what you do.”

The Sheriff’s Command Staff, along with Alumni members, gathered to share a meal and camaraderie. Chief Deputy Keith Lowery expressed gratitude to the alumni for their invaluable contributions to numerous Sheriff’s Office programs. “Where would our SCAN program be without our volunteers?” Lowery praised, referring to the program that provides food, safety, and home visits to senior citizens. “We’re proud of what you do.”

Lowery further emphasized the significance of the alumni's involvement, stating, “We care about you. We respect you. It’s noticed.”

The Alumni Association has been actively engaged in a variety of programs, showcasing their commitment to community service. Some of the notable events they participated in throughout the year include attending picnics and lunches for senior citizens, fundraising through activities like a corn hole competition to support an SRO Fun Fair for students, and staffing events like the Halloween on the Square, Habitat for Humanity Chili Cook-Off, and the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy classes.

The association's involvement extends to building and staffing the Sheriff’s Grinch float for Christmas parades, underlining their dedication to spreading holiday cheer and community spirit.

Community Services Sgt. Gary Herron, who coordinates the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy classes, expressed gratitude towards President Rutz for his leadership, the officers for their participation, and all the members who selflessly volunteer their time.
