MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The City Building & Codes Department is pleased to announce its compliance with State of Tennessee regulations for conducting independent electrical inspections. The State Fire Marshal’s Office review is conducted every three years.

The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance Division of Fire Prevention (State Fire Marshal’s Office) completed an audit of the Building & Codes exempt jurisdiction to conduct electrical inspections. According to the Audit results, the review found the City “adequately enforcing the adopted electrical codes . . . [and is] properly performing inspections” pursuant to state law and regulations.

“We are pleased to receive continued authorization from the Department of Commerce and Insurance to conduct electrical inspections and enforce its own codes,” said Murfreesboro Building & Codes Director Kevin Jones. “Audit compliance confirms that the City has documented this enforcement and is properly performing inspections.”

State law allows the Department of Commerce and Insurance to authorize cities to perform electrical inspections. Authorized cities must adopt and enforce appropriate codes for electrical work, ensure that local inspectors are properly certified, and maintain adequate records of permits and inspection activities. Murfreesboro has adopted the International Building Code, International Residential Code, and International Energy Conservation Code, all published by the International Codes Council, into the Murfreesboro City Code. The State audit, as required by law, included a review of records and transactions demonstrating the City’s ability to enforce its own code.

Kevin Jones was appointed Director of Building & Codes in 2023 after serving as Assistant Director since Nov. 2016. Jones began his employment with the City of Murfreesboro in July 2011 as a Building Inspector and also served as Plan Examiner.
