Murfreesboro,TN - In a concerted effort to enhance safety on the roads during the holiday season, the Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD) has joined forces with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) for the Booze It and Lose It campaign.
Running from December 15, 2023, to January 1, 2024, this collaborative initiative aims to intensify traffic enforcement to deter impaired driving and reduce associated crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
With the holiday festivities in full swing, MPD and THSO are urging residents to plan ahead and arrange for a safe ride home if they choose to indulge in celebrations. Police spokesperson Walker emphasized the importance of responsible choices during this period of increased social gatherings, suggesting alternatives such as asking a friend or relative, using ride-share services, or opting for a taxi.
The Booze It and Lose It campaign carries significant consequences for those caught driving under the influence. In Tennessee, a single DUI conviction for a first-time offender may result in costly fines, court expenses, legal fees, jail time, mandatory drug and alcohol treatment, and potentially the installation of an ignition interlock device.
To support MPD's enhanced enforcement efforts, THSO provides grant funding for the campaign.
