(MURFREESBORO) Patrol Lt. Will Holton with the Rutherford County Sheriffs Office was promoted by Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh to captain of the Support Services Division.
Holton will supervise the Records Division, including civil and criminal warrants documents, Fleet Management, Building Maintenance and the Evidence Division.
As a patrol lieutenant, Holton became concerned about the increasing numbers of overdose deaths in 2020 in Rutherford County.
He worked to obtain a U.S. Department of Justice grant to form a group of deputies assigned to the Strategies and Tactics for Opioid Prevention unit. The deputies work to reduce opioid dependency through education, intervention, prevention and treatment.
Holton graduated from the Northwestern (University) School of Police Staff and Command, an intensive leadership and management education program preparing law enforcement officers for success in senior command positions.
He started his law enforcement career as a deputy/school resource officer in 1998 at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. He joined the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office as a patrol deputy in 2000.
Holton served in various capacities. He worked in the K9 Unit, the Interstate Crime Enforcement Unit and as a detective in the Narcotics Unit where he was assigned to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration task force.
He was promoted later to sergeant in the Narcotics Division and lieutenant in the Patrol Division.
Holton served as a military police officer in the Tennessee National Guard, including deployment in Iraq.
