On Wednesday, a man who was operating a motorized scooter in Nashville reportedly ran through an intersection without stopping and collided with a box truck. Police say that Carly J. Arnett struck a passing Penske truck when he reportedly ran through the intersection without stopping.
Metro Police confirmed the death of the 54-year-old man from Greensburg, Kentucky on Thursday, one day after the incident occurred. The crash happened on New John Hagar Road, which sits between I-40 and J. Percy Priest Lake.
According to the preliminary investigation, the man was riding westbound on a Taizhou Zhongneng F10 Trailmaster scooter when he ran the stop sign and struck the rear side of the box truck that was passing through the intersection. The large truck was driving southbound, as Arnett drove westbound.
The helmet the man was wearing was described by police as a “novelty helmet.” Authorities also report he was not wearing a DOT-approved helmet, but instead a novelty helmet. Novelty helmets may appear to be safe, but they are typically not as secure as Department of Transportation-approved helmets. Novelty helmets are often thinner and lighter than DOT-approved helmets.
Metro PD confirmed Arnett died at the scene. Efforts continue to locate and notify his family. The driver and two passengers of the box truck were not injured.
