The legislative building that houses four State Representatives and two State Senators from Rutherford County was shut down on Thursday. Reports indicate the offices of The Cordell Hull Building were closed after Republican leadership reportedly received envelopes with a white powdery substance in each envelope. All six of the lawmakers who live in Murfreesboro and Smyrna are Republicans.

After the the envelopes were discovered on the 6th floor of the building, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the FBI were called-in to investigate. Ken Jobe, Press Secretary for the Tennessee House Democratic Caucus told WGNS News... Reports indicate the letters were meant to send a threatening message to Republicans and some some of those Republicans suggested off record, “The threats came from Liberal Activist.”

State Representative Mike Sparks of Smyrna told WGNS... Sparks called the letters a form of domestic terrorism... The envelopes were sent to the 6th floor of the building, but again, were deemed to contain some type of over the counter medication that had been grounded down to look like a white powder. There were no hazardous materials found in the envelopes and no injuries or sickness were associated with the incident. WGNS confirmed that by 2-o'clock on Thursday, everyone was given the all clear and all floors were reopened.

Numerous letters that also contained a white powder were sent to Republican lawmakers in other parts of the country in recent days. Earlier this week, around 100 Republicans in Kansas received envelopes, each containing a white powered substance. Similar letters were also sent to former Republican President Donald Trump and one letter was sent to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Some of the letters were intercepted by the US Postal Inspection Service before reaching their intended target. However, none of the letters have been confirmed to contain any hazardous material.
